The phenomenon of revenge porn has been on the rise lately on several social media platforms. This act of revenge involves spreading sexual images or videos of a person without permission. Revenge porn is becoming more prevalent among young people because of the ease with which people can spread information through social media.

Know What Revenge Porn and Sextortion Are

Revenge porn is the act of disseminating non-consensual sexual images or videos of a person without the permission of the individual involved, for revenge. Revenge porn can be a form of sexual harassment and invasion of privacy that can be harmful and traumatizing to the victim.

Someone may also threaten to share sexual images or videos online if you do not comply with their requests. This is referred to as sextortion. The perpetrator's request could be for money, sexual activity, or something else. Unlike revenge porn, sextortion is not always done by people you know. Strangers or new acquaintances can do it.

Why People Do Revenge Porn

In the case of revenge porn, the urge to take revenge or hurt the person who has hurt is a form of emotional reaction. The pain and betrayal can lead to anger and the desire to give the person who hurt them the same feeling.

However, it is important to remember that the act of sharing private content without permission is still a crime and can harm many parties. Unfortunately, the easy access to social media and its wide reach can be freely utilized by someone as a means of revenge. The urge to do so is usually supported by several factors, such:

Lack of empathy towards others

According to research, there is a common trait found in revenge porn offenders, where they tend to have a lack of empathy towards others. This lack of empathy may mean that they don't fully understand the pain and trauma that victims can experience as a result of their actions. Thus, they can share sexual images or videos of someone without any sense of burden or compassion.

The need to feel powerful or in control of the situation

The need to feel powerful or in control of the situation is one of the factors that can drive people to revenge porn. They can feel satisfied when their revenge is paid and can see someone who hurt them feel pain, sadness, shame, and depression.

Perception that the act of revenge can ease the hurt felt

A person may think that sharing pictures or videos of someone will subside the hurt they feel. People like this tend to have difficulty coping with negative emotions and doing things that can harm others without thinking.

Heartache, grudges, or emotional problems do not justify someone doing revenge porn. There are better and more constructive ways to deal with these feelings. You can talk to someone you trust or seek the help of a doctor or psychologist to overcome your negative feelings.

If you need medical advice or consultation, you can either visit a doctor or use the consultation features available in the Ai Care application by downloading the Ai Care application from the App Store or Play Store.
